My top 10 favorite substitutions
So I think a huge part in being successful in my fitness journey and with work has been being able to find healthy substitutions to satisfy my taste buds. As I've mentioned before I am not a fan AT ALL of crash dieting, fad diets, or cutting a specific macro nutrient out or to an extreme low. I am all about finding what works best for my body and my clients, something that is sustainable and turned in to a lifestyle not just a temporary solution to drop a bunch of weight quickly. Because guess what, when you crash diet and lose a drastic amount of weight in a short period of time you will more then likely gain it all back AND SOME. Unless you have the tools and knowledge to slowly reverse back out of whatever it is you have decided to do, which lets be honest 99 percent of the world probably doesn't. So today I want to share my top 10 healthy alternatives!!
1) Liquid aminos (i use bragg's) this is a healthier alternative for soy sauce
2) Halo top ice cream- I've tried many different brands and this by far is the best tasting and will not set you back like a pint of ben n jerry's will. Higher in protein and lower in fat, sugar, and carbs.
3) Plain greek yogurt- So i seriously use this for EVERYTHING, I use it instead of mayo for tuna or chicken salad and i constantly substitute any sort of cream with it. Not to mention greek yogurt has so many different benefits as far as GUT HEALTH.
4) Spaghetti squash & zucchini- As you can see on my blog and if you have worked with me before you know i have a slight obsession with spaghetti squash. I think I've probably tried every sort of spaghetti squash dish possible. It is an AWESOME sub for spaghetti noodles, bread, tortillas. My favorite is my spaghetti squash chow mein, enchiladas, and buffalo chicken dish.
5) protein powder- I use protein powder for the obvious which is for shakes, but its also awesome for those late night sugar cravings i get sometimes. I also use it often to sweeten my oats instead of adding a bunch of sugar. Baked good as well, Protein pancakes are AMAZING!
6) Coconut spray- it usually consists of close to nothing. Most people feel the need to smother everything in butter and oils. These are super high in fat, most people also don't realize how much. Fat is not bad but should be consumed in moderation like everything else. I personally like to ration out my fats and save them for things like peanut butter and avocado!
7) yogurt based dressings- dressings, sauces, and marinades are usually TERRIBLE. I've been seeing a lot of awesome yogurt based dressings that are wayyyyy healthier then your standard ranch or balsamic. If you're a dressing lover like me, these are great!!!
8) Stevia- cut out the SUGAR! It will make a HUGE difference.
9) Applesauce- especially if you are a baker!! Make sure you aren't getting the apple sauce with a ton of added sugar, sorta defeats the purpose. I always remember "An apple a day keeps the doctors away"
10) Vodka sodas- people and clients often ask me what i drink when i drink.. well normally my go to is a vodka soda. Try and stay away from the sugary margaritas and beer. If you are trying to slim down all the sugary crap, wine, and beer are not your friends! The clearer the better. Vodka soda with a squeeze of orange or lime is going to be the easiest on your waistline and not only that, your hang over won't be nearly as bad!! ;)
